By the Canal
A flash of iridescent blue skims
the sluggish surface where fish lurk beneath,
among the shady weeds; a dragonfly
hovers on fragile wings, and darts away.
Swallows swoop, snipping the torpid air,
where swarms of midges dance.
A gaily-painted narrowboat chugs by,
smoke rising from its ancient chimney stack;
and on its roof a brindled dog is snoozing
in noonday heat, among the gaudy flowers
which drip bright splashes of reflected colour
into the ruffled water.
